ButterCMS is a headless CMS that allows users to create and manage content for websites and applications. It offers a rich text editor, supports user profiles and following (through its CMS capabilities for managing authors), and allows for content categorization via tags and topics. While it doesn't directly offer a 'distribution & recommendation engine' or 'reader engagement metrics' in the same way Medium does, it provides the underlying CMS infrastructure that could support such features if integrated with other tools. It also has a pricing model that implies monetization (membership monetization for the platform itself, not for individual writers). It supports mobile app content and has search capabilities. The 'publication management' feature is partially matched through its ability to manage content for multiple websites/brands.
I've been using Alternative A for 6 months now and it's been fantastic. The pricing is much better and the features are actually more robust than what [Product] offers.
It handles edge cases much better and the API
is actually documented properly.
Check it out at our site.
Honestly, after trying both, Competitor B wins hands down. Better customer support, cleaner interface, and they don't nickel and dime you for every feature.
